Child Resource Worker Assistant

 

8 week Summer Student contract position, 30 hours per week 

Reports to: The Ontario Early Years Managers 

General Responsibilities 

The Early Years Summer assists with the Ontario Early Years Program by providing early learning/literacy activities, child care and outreach services. 

Specific Responsibilities

• Assists Ontario Early Years program staff in implementing and maintaining high quality early learning activities/programs 

• Provides childcare for small group of children up to 12 years of age while parents/caregivers are in premises 

• Maintains a welcoming, organized, safe, clean Early Years environment 

• Assists in implementing outreach strategies 

• Works independently and as team member 

• Collects program data according to the Jane/Finch Community and Family Centre and Ministry standards 

• Provides service with an awareness of, and sensitivity to, diversity/special needs issues 

• Adheres to organizational policies, procedures and related legislation 

• Performs other duties, as required 

Qualifications

• Experience working within a diverse community 

• Demonstrated ability to work with confidential information appropriately and with sensitivity 

• Ability to communicate fluently in English, verbally and in writing 

• Verbal and written fluency in a second language as represented in the Jane/Finch Community an asset. 

• Demonstrated cultural competence and experience working with a diversity of communities/cultures 

• Demonstrated ability to work with confidential information appropriately and with sensitivity 

• Proven commitment to organizational principles of anti-discrimination, anti-oppression and community development 

• Ability to work both independently and co-operatively as a member of the Jane/Finch Community and Family Centre team, and fulfill policies and procedures of the organization 

• Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word and Explorer) 

• A satisfactory police check is required.

This position is funded through the HRSDC’s Canada Summer Jobs program. According to the program terms and agreements, eligibility for participating in this program is granted to candidates who: 

• Are between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment 

• Were registered as a full-time student during the preceding academic year 

• Intend to return to school full time in the upcoming academic year 

• Are students in a secondary, post-secondary, CEGEP, vocational or technical program 

• Are Canadian Citizens, permanent residents, or persons on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act 

• Are legally entitled to work in Canada

Community Development Worker

8 week Summer Student contract position, 30 hours per week 

Reports to: The Manager of Community Capacity 

General Responsibilities 

The Assistant Program Worker will assist the Action for Neighbourhood Change / Community Development workers to plan and implement relevant programs. 

Specific Responsibilities 

• Organize and facilitate appropriate social, recreational and educational activities for residents, including children 

• Assist in organizing summer activities (BBQ) 

• Assist with back pack distribution 

• Design flyers and outreach materials including signage 

• Provides support to program participants including information sharing and in person/telephone support 

• Involves residents in program planning 

• Conducts outreach to residents, community agencies and groups in order to promote the program and events 

• Must be able to participate/attend (Resident Task Force meetings and ANC BBQ) 

• Perform other duties as required 

Qualifications

• Experience working with residents 

• Ability to organize summer activities and outings 

• Creativity, initiative and sense of humor 

• Knowledge of the Jane Finch community 

• Post-secondary student in sociology, cultural studies, emigration, political science, urban planning or a relevant discipline. 

• Knowledge of project management skills including the ability to handle multiple tasks and problem solving skills 

• Excellent communication skills, both written and oral with a demonstrated ability to prepare and administer presentations 

• Knowledge and understanding of the Jane Finch Community and an ability to relate to socially and economically disadvantaged community members 

• Demonstrated cultural competence and experience working with a diversity of communities/cultures. 

• Proven commitment to organizational principles of anti-discrimination, anti-oppression and community development. 

• Ability to generate enthusiasm, to offer creative solutions and foster a positive working environment. 

• Ability to communicate fluently in a language represented by the Jane Finch Centre 

• Basic computer skills in MS Office, Internet 

• A Police Vulnerable Sector Check is required for this position.

Youth Engagement Student

8 week Summer Student contract position, 30 hours per week 

Reports to: Senior Program Manager 

General Responsibilities

The Youth Engagement Assistant is a support to youth programs and initiatives. He/She is a member of the Youth Team. He/she is responsible for staffing, planning and implementing youth group activities. He/she will ensure effective and efficient reporting of the programs and will work in partnership with other community organizations to fulfill program goals. 

Specific Responsibilities

• Develops and implements community development, group, leadership training and partnership initiatives and programs that support youth objectives. 

• Represents the Jane/Finch Community and Family Centre on various networks and community partnerships as required. 

• Performs Youth program record keeping, budgeting, development, implementation and evaluation activities. 

• Supervises volunteers and students, and supports their learning goals. 

• Assist with the organization of The Spot youth conference 

• Participate in the organization of Freedom Fridayz 

• Performs other duties, as required. 

Qualifications

• Relevant education in Community Development or equivalent. Demonstrated experience related to Youth. 

• Strong community development knowledge and experience including program development, partnerships, project coordination, networking, advocacy and group facilitation. 

• Ability to identify and respond to new and emerging community needs related to Youth. 

• Proven ability to serve in a leadership capacity to participants in Youth programs. For example, to target high risk youth and children in Jane-Finch community. 

• Knowledgeable about issues facing the Jane-Finch community. 

• Experience living and/or working in the Jane-Finch community a definite asset. 

• Competent in building partnerships within the community. 

• Demonstrated cultural competence and experience working with a diversity of communities/cultures. 

• Demonstrated ability to work appropriately and sensitively with confidential information. 

• Strong planning, time management, problem-solving and interpersonal skills. 

• Ability to communicate fluently in English, verbally and in writing. 

• Verbal and written fluency in a second language as represented in the Jane/Finch Community an asset. 

• Ability to create and maintain program management systems, reports and statistical information. 

• Good computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Explorer). 

• Excellent problem solving and crisis management skills. 

• Demonstrated understanding and proven commitment to organizational principles of anti-discrimination, anti-oppression, and community development. 

• A good sense of humour and ability to work both independently and co-operatively as a member of the Jane/Finch Community and Family Centre team, and fulfill policies and procedures of the organization. 

• Willingness to work evenings and weekends as required.
